What is Sensory for Seniors? (FAQ)

 What is Sensory for Seniors?

Sensory for Seniors is a community project that makes and provides sensory (or “activity”) mats to local seniors suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s. These mats have been shown to lift spirits, relieve caregivers, stimulate the senses and memory, as well as exercising the fingers and hands.

   How Do Sensory Mats Help?

Sensory mats help four inter-related factors:
         -behavioral competence
         -psychological well-being
         -perceived quality of life
         -objective environment

In a study published by the American Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias, caregivers reported a decrease in a psychological discomfort levels in subjects with advanced stages of Alzheimer’s who had been exposed to sensory stimulation. It was concluded that sensory stimulation could increase the psychological well being of memory loss sufferers. Sensory stimulation has also been shown to decrease agitation and restlessness, as well as improve sleep.

These mats can also provide a safe feeling, much like a security blanket. Because of this, depression and anxiety rates are lower and stress levels drop dramatically. They also increase opportunity for choice and self-determination, and have lead non-responsive patients to become more communicative.

What Do Sensory Mats Look Like?

Sensory mats look like lap pillows, usually made of colorful fabric. Sewn onto the pillows (or “mats”) are “sensory items”, which can be, but are not limited to: buttons, ribbons, drawstring pouches, zippers, and loofahs. Textured fabric can also be used for the back of the mat to make both sides interactive.

Sensory mats are a much needed donation for nursing homes and can improve the lives of those who receive them. Sensory for Seniors will provide those who need them with one, and help those who once helped us.
